Chateau Belle Assise Coureau Saint Emilion Grand Cru 2022 with a sharp label

Château Belle Assise Coureau 2022

Saint-Émilion Grand Cru – Outstanding Value

A beautifully balanced Saint-Émilion Grand Cru from the excellent 2022 vintage, combining richness, structure, and immediate appeal.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby-garnet in color.

The nose opens with ripe plum, black cherry, and violet, layered with cedar, spice, and subtle earthy notes.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and structured, with firm yet polished tannins, a velvety texture, and a long finish marked by dark fruit and a touch of cocoa.

Blend & Structure

  • 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Drink now through 2040

Winemaking

Aged 16 months in French oak barrels (60% new), adding depth and complexity while preserving fruit expression.

Critical Acclaim

  • 92 points – Decanter
Smells lovely, floral and fresh, lively and expressive, cool blue fruits, violets and stony touches. Smooth and silky, supple and succulent - so much juiciness and life to this before the salty, quite imposing tannins come in, giving such a great grip to the palate, fully mouth coating.
  • Blackcurrant, dark chocolate, liquorice and cola flavours - balanced and appealing, nothing harsh or dry, more ripe and round. Well-defined, cool and fresh, with lovely Cabernet aspects. This is delicious and moreish - a total crowd pleaser, with depth, density and detail.

  • 3.65pH. A yield of 45hl/ha. Harvest: Merlot, 28 September; Malbec and Cabernet Franc, 6 October. Ageing 16 months in oak, 40% new, 50% one wine barrels, 10% cement.
  • Paul Junet winemaker/consultant.
  • Drinking window: 2026-2040. (Georgina Hindle, decanter.com, March 31, 2023)

Food Pairing

Ideal with:

  • Grilled ribeye or T-bone steak
  • Lamb chops with rosemary
  • Beef Wellington Venison or wild boar
  • Short ribs (BBQ or braised)
  • Hard cheeses like aged Cheddar or Mimolette

The Estate
The 15.5-hectare vineyard of Château Belle Assise Coureau lies on a gentle sandy slope south of the Saint-Émilion limestone plateau. The 35-year-old vines are rooted in ancient sand-and-gravel soils, benefiting from ideal sun exposure and protection from the Dordogne River.

Once owned by the Brun family, the estate was purchased in 2013 by a group of friends led by Jean-Pierre Beltoise, the late Formula 1 driver and Monaco Grand Prix winner, and Alain Garitey, a Parisian lawyer. Today, Lionel Gallais manages the property, with Paul Junet as winemaker, bringing energy and precision to every vintage.
