L’Inclassable de Rémy Fauchey 2016: The Special CuvéeThe Prestige Expression of Château l'Inclassable | Médoc, Bordeaux
In the rigid hierarchy of Bordeaux, some wines are born to break the rules. The L’Inclassable de Rémy Fauchey 2016 is the estate’s Special Cuvée—a limited, high-performance bottling representing the absolute pinnacle of the Fauchey family’s holdings. While the estate’s standard wines are classic Médoc, this Cuvée is designed to disrupt, consistently outperforming Classified Growths in blind tastings by prioritizing the soul of the soil over the status of the label.
From Forbidden to Unclassifiable: A Legacy Reborn
The history of this estate has been anything but tranquil. For over two centuries, the property proudly bore the name Château Lafon. However, a series of intense legal disputes with the Bordeaux hierarchy forever altered its trajectory. In 2003, the family was forbidden to use their historic name—a moment that could have been the end, but became a defiant new beginning instead.
Rising from the challenge, Rémy Fauchey rechristened the estate Château L’Inclassable (The Unclassifiable). It was a statement of intent: if the wine could no longer carry its old name, it would instead be defined by a quality that defied categorization. Today, this Special Cuvée carries that resilient spirit in every bottle—a triumph of passion over bureaucracy.
Why the "Special Cuvée" is Different
Unlike the standard estate bottling, the 2016 Special Cuvée is a parcel selection of the oldest vines on the property. These deep-rooted vines struggle through the Médoc’s famous gravel-clay soils to produce fruit of extraordinary concentration.
The Blend: A Cabernet Sauvignon-led powerhouse, balanced by the plushness of Merlot and the structural spice of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
The Secret: Crafted from Rémy’s ancestral notebooks, the winemaking process involves precision-aging in fine-grained French oak, a closely guarded family secret.
The Result: A wine that captures the power of the 2016 vintage—widely considered the decade's finest—while maintaining a silkiness rarely found at this price point.
L’Inclassable de Rémy Fauchey 2016 is also a popular wine with sommeliers at high-end French restaurants in Japan.
Tasting Notes: The 2016 Maturity
Now entering its prime drinking window, the 2016 vintage has moved past its youthful aggression and is beginning to show the sophisticated tertiary notes that collectors crave.
On the Nose: A commanding core of black cherry and crème de cassis, layered with noble notes of cedar, clove, and the classic sous-bois (forest floor) of a maturing Médoc.
On the Palate: Dense and velvety. The 2016 acidity provides a vibrant backbone for flavors of dark plum and licorice, while the tannins have softened into a refined, graphite-edged finish.
Collector’s Technical Guarantee
To ensure this Special Cuvée survives the decades, it is sealed with the DIAM 30 cork. This is not a standard closure; it is a high-tech guarantee against TCA (cork taint) and oxidation, reserved for Grand Crus with 30-year aging potential.
Drink: Now (with decanting) or cellar with confidence through 2036–2040.
Service & Pairing
The Ritual: Decant for at least 2 hours. This is a structured "sleeping giant" that needs oxygen to fully unfurl its aromatic layers.
The Temperature: Best enjoyed at 16–17°C.
The Table: This wine demands rich flavors—dry-aged ribeye, slow-roasted lamb with rosemary, or a truffle-infused mushroom risotto.
